The Duke of York is attractively sited on the harbour edge at the bottom of the famous 199 steps that lead up to Whitby Abbey. The church on the clifftop is the Grade I listed St Mary’s, which is just a hundred metres from the abbey (photo 1).

The Duke of York is at the end of ancient Church Street (photo 2) and displays lots of historic documents relating to the fishing industry. It is open all day serving food and a range of real ales, and has has great views of the harbour and of West Cliff. It also provides accommodation with six en-suite bedrooms.
