The Eldon Arms in Southsea has a striking tiled exterior promoting the ales of Eldridge Pope from distant Dorset (photo 1). It’s a very long time since Eldridge Pope owned the pub and it now serves beers like Doom Bar and Tribute, both from Cornwall. The pub has expanded into the house next door so it’s quite spacious inside.
The pub was designed in 1899 by A.E. Guy, one of the less celebrated Victorian pub architects of Portsmouth. Local breweries had been competing to build ever more elaborate pubs and Eldridge Pope clearly realised that they needed to do the same if they were to compete.
It’s a community pub offering an impressive range of pub games which include pool, bar billiards, darts, dominoes and crib. It has TV screens for sport, does lunchtime and evening meals and has a garden at the back.

Where is Eldon Street Southsea?
Turn off Winston Churchill Avenue in Portsmouth on to Middle Street and follow it until it becomes Eldon Street. Or turn off Kings Road in Southsea on to Norfolk Street and follow it until it becomes Eldon Street. Hope this helps.
