The Fawcett is an imposing Mock Tudor corner pub with a witch’s hat tower dating back to 1886 (photo 1).
Like many Southsea and Portsmouths pubs with a grand exterior, it comes as a bit of surprise to find that it’s a proper community pub with a pool table, quiz night, live music, Sunday roasts, sports TV and a meat raffle. There are two regular cask beers and one guest, and real cider is old.
The pub was designed by architect A.H. Bone for local brewery Brickwoods and their signage can still be seen outside. The ‘British & Foreign’ sign on the facade (photo 2) refers to the wines and spirits sold when the pub was built, indicating it was a superior establishment. The inn sign shows a Fawcett cannon made in Liverpool which would have been in use in the first Boer War of 1880-81.
