The Fountain was designed by prolific pub architect A. E. Cogswell in 1895 at the height of the Victorian pub-building boom. The ground floor is a mix of colourful tiling and glazed brick with two cast iron columns guarding the entrance. Inside it still has its elaborate wooden bar back with arches and balusters. Above the doors are some original stained glass windows. It’s one of only a small number of Portsmouth’s Victorian pubs to be Grade II listed.
Live sport is the thing here and there are TVs in every corner showing football, rugby and cricket. The Fountain is a Fullers pub and serves their beers, including Gale’s HSB which was once brewed a few miles away in Horndean.
