Traditional Village Pub
The George is currently closed while Greene King search for a new tenant.
The George is an 18th century coaching inn next to the parish church in the centre of Tideswell. It’s a large pub, concentrating mainly on food in the lounge and dining area but it still has a separate tap room.
The pub was once owned by Hardy and Hansons Brewery from Nottingham and is now a Greene King house. Food is available Tuesday to Saturday with bar food at lunchtimes and the restaurant menu in the evenings 5pm until 8pm. The popular Sunday lunches are served 12noon to 5pm and booking is recommended. There are usually two cask beers.
The George also offers accommodation in four ensuite rooms, and campervan and motorhome owners who are Brit Stops members can stay overnight in the car park.
The church next door is the Grade I listed St John the Baptist, known as the “Cathedral of the Peak” because of its size and grandeur.
The closeness of divinity has not stopped the George from being haunted, and at the dead of night the ghost of Old Sarah, a Victorian woman searching for her husband, has been seen in the pub.
