The Leopold has a wonderful ceramic facade celebrating the Portsmouth and Brighton United Breweries (photo 1). The brewery was a big player in Portsmouth back in the early 20th century with over 270 pubs but they were taken over by local rivals Brickwoods in 1953. There’s still lots of reminders of them in pubs across Portsmouth and Gosport, and also in Brighton.
The pub has had a chequered recent history, closing down in 2017 after several years as a popular real ale destination. It eventually reopened with a focus on sports and with several TV screens but it does still have a good selection of cask ales.
The pub is on the corner of Leopold Street and was probably named after the street. The character on the inn sign is King Leopold I of Belgium who was backed by Britain and became a British citizen after marrying Princess Charlotte of Wales in 1816 (photo 2).
