Northern Monk Refectory

The Old Flax Store, Marshalls Mill
Holbeck
Leeds
West Yorkshire
LS11 9YJ

Northern Monk Brewery is on the ground floor of this old flax store in Holbeck and the refectory, or bar, is on the first floor. The large open bar embraces the industrial chic style typical of many brewery taps and drinking halls, with silver ceiling pipes, exposed brickwork and large wood and metal tables.

There are 16 taps mainly serving beer from the brewery downstairs, but also from their other brewery a mile away. A blackboard behind the bar counter lists what is on offer and usually includes a couple of cask beers, along with keg beers in an adventurous range of styles. There is also an outdoor space with several bench style tables.

Northern Monk Brewery was founded in 2013 and the brewery at the flax store opened in 2014. It’s been a huge success and they opened their second, much larger brewery, also in Holbeck, in 2017, and another Refectory in Manchester’s Northern Quarter soon afterwards.

The flax store brewery does tours which last about 45 minutes, with a third pint sample of three different beers.

The flax store is part of Marshall Mills a Grade II listed group of buildings built in the early 1800s that became one of the biggest producers and exporters of flax in the world.
