The Olde Trip to Jerusalem is a well established attraction on the tourist trail around Nottingham City Centre. It’s a whitewashed building at the bottom of the rock that holds Nottingham Castle (photos 1 & 2). Its fame is partly due to its age and partly due to the cave rooms at the back that are cut into the rock (photos 3 & 4).

The notion that the pub was the haunt of soldiers departing for the crusades explains the pub name and the 1189AD date painted on the outside walls. The Trip actually dates from around 1683 when the castle was built. That’s still pretty old, and the fascinating interior really deserves a visit.

A galleon in a glass case hangs above the upstairs bar (photo 3). It is said to be cursed because the last three people who tried to clean it died in mysterious circumstances and as a result, it has not been cleaned for 50 years! The pub is haunted as well, with a number of reports of ghosts. There are noises from the cellar which was once used to hold prisoners from the castle.

The lovely old glass panel sign above the front door is a relic of the Ward family who owned the pub for 100 years (photo 5).

The pub serves meals lunchtime and evening and has a varied range of guest beers in addition to the Greene King regulars.
