Red Lion, Colne

The Red Lion in Colne is a stone-built town centre pub dating from 1791 (photo 2). Like most northern Sam Smith’s pubs it’s a proper boozer with no food, no music, no TV and, since 2019, no digital devices. Inside there  three rooms and a wood-panelled bar counter with Old Brewery Bitter on cask.

The lettering in the stained glass window looks like ‘OSB’ but is actually ‘SSOB’ standing for Samuel Smith’s Old Brewery (photo 1). Although it looks old I think it is fairly recent, though I’m happy to be corrected. There are similar windows at the Old Red Lion in Leeds.

Above the doorway is a carved reclining red lion with a golden crown which really is quite old (photo 3).
