Traditional Town Pub

The Magnet is a little way out of Stockport town centre but that doesn’t deter the drinkers who fill the place most evenings. They’re there for the beer, both for the quality and for the range, with 14 cask ales, 12 craft beers on tap and a large selection of bottles. They also have craft gins and a decent selection of malt whiskies. There’s a pizza hut outside Thursday Friday and Saturday evenings and pork pies all the time.

It’s a large pub with multiple rooms and spaces and a room upstairs which opens at busy times, so you should find a seat. There’s also a large beer garden at the back with terraces and a great view of the railway viaduct. If you’re into pub games there’s both traditional (a pool table and 2 dartboards) and newly and coolly popular (a collection of board games).

The family who run the Magnet took over a failing keg only pub in 2009 and transformed it into the beery paradise it is today, winning multiple awards along the way. At the time of writing there’s a display on the outside wall celebrating an award from an unlikely source, National Geographic magazine.
