The Black Horse is a magnificent corner building in the centre of Otley dating from 1901 (photos 1 & 2) . It’s jointly owned by Kirkstall Brewery and Brudenell Social Club, both in Leeds, and they carried out a fine refurbishment in 2019. An earlier refit in 1995 added an impressive wooden bar counter and bar back and this was preserved. Also retained was the exquisite floor and wall tiling, and new chandeliers and cut glass windows were added to enhance the Victorian feel (photo 3). Like all Kirkstall Brewery pubs a great selection of old brewery mirrors and posters decorate the walls (photo 4). The main doorway has a lovely original mosaic tiled floor (photo 2).

At least five of Kirkstall Brewery’s cask beers are served along with up to three guests. Food includes burgers, fish and chips, kebabs and pizzas and is served all day. Accommodation is available in 11 en-suite bedrooms.

The Brudenell Social Club is a famous music venue in Burley in Leeds and their influence has brought music to the upstairs function room and the covered outdoor Stables Yard. The last photo shows an outdoor concert which was part of the annual Otley Folk Festival (photo 4).  The Otley Folk Club meet in the bar upstairs every Wednesday evening with a mix of guest acts and singers nights.
