Traditional Town Pub, Brewpub
The Deer’s Head is Belfast’s only brewpub, and Bells Brewery is on display behind a glass screen on the upper level. There are 8 or more of its keg beers on tap and countless others available in can, with the usual range of IPAs and pale ales along with lagers, weissbiers and fair selection of sours. The brewery is named after John Bell who had a brewery on the same street in the 1800s in what was once Belfast’s brewery quarter.
The pub dates from 1885 and is an imposing structure with a corner turret. It has been refitted recently but it still looks very traditional with a carved and tiled bar counter and a terrazzo style floor. The drinking booths in the upper level are ironically for diners only, at least during the day, but the menu looks like a step above the normal pub offering. There’s a cosy corner snug at the North Street end.
Free trad music sessions, live acts and Irish dancing feature, and there are an impressive number of ticketed music and spoken word events throughout the week.
