Kirkstone Pass Inn

One of the highest pubs in England, the Kirkstone Pass Inn sits at the top of The Struggle, a narrow lane which climbs steeply from Ambleside (photo 1). It was a coaching inn on the long haul over the pass to Ullswater and Penrith and must have been a welcome sight for travellers on a cold winters night (photo 2). In the summer there are fantastic views from the pub tables across the road. Meals are served all day in the summer but may not be available at all in the winter. Accommodation includes rooms in the pub and in the next door bothy.

The pub sells a postcard which tells the story of the doomed love of a past landlord’s daughter and a boy from Ambleside who made the daily journey by foot up up the long steep road. The pub is also haunted by the ghosts of several folk, most of whom met their end on the dangerous journey over the pass.
