The New Inn in Gildersome near Leeds is probably the only surviving pub in Yorkshire with an art deco exterior. It was built in the 1930s in the streamlined ‘moderne’ style, with a flat roof, long metal windows with horizontal banding and white rendering (photo 1).
The interior had lost most of its art deco look until the 1990s when a refurbishment by Samuels Smith’s brewery restored many of the original 1930s features. The bars have fixed seating, mirrors and 1930s style fireplaces with wood surrounds and interior tiling (photos 2 & 4). The drinking lobby has parquet flooring, tiled walls and an art deco style bar counter (photo 3).
All the beers are from Sam Smiths, including handpumped Old Brewery Bitter, keg beers like 5X Bitter, Dark Mild and Alpine Lager and a selection of the brewery’s excellent bottled ales. It’s a community pub and despite what the photos might indicate, it fills up with locals early evenings and weekends. There is a large garden at the back which is popular on warmer days. There is no food.
