This picture postcard inn with its whitewashed walls and thatched roof is in the classic Cornish coastal setting of Holywell Bay (photo 1). The Treguth Inn is an ancient building  dating back to the early 1600s, and it spent most of its time as fisherman’s cottage before becoming a pub in 1912.

The porch with bench seating was once a classic feature of country pubs across the country but not many now remain (photo 2). They were usually the only outdoor seating available before pub gardens became popular and would also have served as a waiting area for those buying beer to take away (usually women who weren’t allowed inside). In more recent times it was probably a place used by parents to leave their children with a bottle of pop and a bag of crisps while they drank inside.

Food is the main focus here and meals are served lunchtimes and evenings. There is a weekly quiz and Premier League games are shown on the pub TV.

Scenes from the 2020 German TV film Falsches Leben, wahre Liebe (False Life, True Love) based on a novel by Cornish author Rosamunde Pilcher were shot at the Treguth.
