Traditional Town Pub
This was Kirkstall Brewery’s first pub and, with its nicely re-created Victorian interior and old brewery memorabilia covering the walls, was the blueprint for their later ones. There’s a large upstairs room divided into three spaces and a snug behind the bar counter. Downstairs is another bar and a large outdoor beer garden which sits right next to the River Aire. The pub frontage, surprisingly, remains very plain with no signage.
There are eight cask beers, mostly from Kirkstall, with a changing selection from associated breweries like Craven, Harvey’s and Five Points, and 12 keg beers, again mostly Kirkstall. There’s a good, wide-ranging food menu which includes pub classics, pizzas, burgers, loaded fries and some classy small plates, all served until late evening.
Kirkstall brew some pretty good beers and there’s a decent crawl starting here and carrying on down Kirkstall Road to The Cardigan Arms (a Kirkstall pub) and the Kirkstall Brewery Tap.
The pub was once owned by the original Kirkstall Brewery which closed in 1983 but still stands just across the river. The old metal sign over the car park entrance shows that the pub was previously called the ‘Old Bridge Inn’.
The pub is a long walk out of town. Buses 33, 34 and 60 from Leeds Bus Station and The Headrow stop nearby.
