Traditional Town Pub

The Alexandra Hotel is one of two pubs close to Derby station that are hugely popular with real ale fans. The other is the nearby Brunswick and many visitors arriving by rail get no further than these two before heading home again.

The pub has a railway theme with photos and memorabilia covering the walls (photo 2), and the cab of an old diesel loco in the garden. The Alexandra was once owned by Shipstone’s Brewery from Nottingham and the Derby branch of the Campaign for Real Ale was formed here in 1974.

Castle Rock Brewery, also from Nottingham, now own the pub and two of their beers are on permanently along with six well chosen guest beers (photo 3). Pork pies, sausage rolls and cobs are available all day and there are four letting rooms if you miss your last train.
