Barge Inn, Honeystreet

The Barge Inn is on the Kennet and Avon canal close to the wharf at Honeystreet where boatbuilders built barges for the canal and many other canals. The pub was built to serve the boatyard workers and the bargees, and also had a bakery, a shop, and stables for the horses that pulled the barges. The pub was built just across the parish boundary some way from the wharf because the local parish did not allow the sale of alcohol!

My annual cycle trip with three friends a couple of years ago took us on a leisurely ride along the canal from Bristol to Reading. On day two of our cycle trip we arrived at the Barge just before opening time, so of course we hung on to have an early pint.

The pub was closed for a while in 2019 but has now reopened with new licensees. It’s open all day serving three cask ales and food, and has live music at the weekend.
