Traditional Town Pub, 3* Heritage Pub

The Beacon is one of those places where you’re likely to find not only locals but pub fans from across the country. The big attractions here are the brewery at the back which produces the hugely popular Sarah Hughes Dark Ruby Mild, and the historic interior of multiple rooms surrounding the small enclosed bar area.

The brewery closed in 1950 but was reopened by John Hughes* in 1987 to recreate the 6% mild brewed by his grandmother Sarah in the 1920s. Two bitters, Pale Amber at 4% and Sedgley Surprise at 5% are also brewed, and if you want something more modern there is usually a pale ale or blond among the guest beers.

The bar counter area is surprisingly small, with a floor to ceiling wood and leaded glass surround and the serving hatches are so low that you have to crouch down to order a drink.

The Beacon is like stepping back in time in other ways as well, heaving with customers at almost any time of day. And there are cobs of course, supplied by local firm Rustic Eatery.

*Sadly John died aged 87 on 16th June 2025.
