This is a sixteenth century timber-framed pub on the market square in the centre of town (photo 1). It is Grade II listed and although it has been opened out, still has low beams, a 17th century stone fireplace and a stone-flagged floor. Its most famous claim to fame is hosting Oliver Cromwell’s army on the day before the Battle of Marston Moor in 1644.
The pub appeared in the TV drama series The Chase about a veterinary practice set in the fictional town of Oxley. It also featured in the Hairy Bikers’ Pubs that Built Britain TV series.
The illuminated Tetley lantern (photo 2), once a common sight around Yorkshire, is now probably unique.
The pub is open all day and though it does lunchtime meals it is really more of a drinkers pub.
