Traditional Town Pub, 3* Heritage Pub
The Black Horse is an imposing red brick and stone building but it’s not enough to prepare you for the spectacular unaltered interior. Head first for the corner door on the right into the Public Bar to see its magnificent curved ceramic counter and mosaic tiled floor dating from the building of the pub in 1898.
Beyond the public bar the Smoke Room and the Bar Parlour also have original fittings, including stained glass windows and doors with beautiful cut glass panels. The mosaic floor continues around the bar counter to the amazing ‘Hall of Mirrors’ at the rear with its U-shaped seating, mirrors and more colourful stained glass.
It’s a top beer pub as well and was a Camra Pub of the Year national finalist in 2024, and has been the Central Lancashire Camra branch Pub of the Year for 2023, 2024 and 2025. It’s also won awards for it cider and was Central Lancashire’s Cider Pub of the year in 2025
The Black Horse is one of only a few pubs owned by Robinsons of Stockport to sell guest beers and usually has two or three of the brewery’s own ales including, in winter, the excellent Old Tom. There’s also another five or six beers, usually with one from Titanic, plus two real ciders on handpump.
