Traditional Town Pub, 3* Heritage Pub
The Black Horse is a mini gin palace, a smallish corner pub with an exceptional unaltered interior. The highlight is the magnificent curved ceramic bar counter and mosaic tiled floor in the public bar (photo 2).
Beyond the public bar there are two rooms with original fittings including doors with cut glass windows (photo 4). The hall of mirrors at the back has U-shaped seating, mirrors and colourful stained glass.
The pub was built as a small hotel in 1898 and has an imposing three storey exterior with ornate entrances (photo 1) and a fine carved corner sign (photo 3).
It’s owned by Robinsons of Stockport and usually sells four of their beers including Dizzy Blonde, and in winter, Old Tom. There are also four guest real ales, usually including some from Titanic, plus two real ciders from Westons. The pub has been the Central Lancashire Camra branch Pub of the Year for 2023 and 2024.
There is live music in the upstairs bar most Saturday evenings.
