Traditional Town Pub, 2* Heritage Pub
The Black Horse is a great little pub, probably my favourite in Whitby. There’s a lovely old front bar where the counter, bar back and wall panelling all date from a refit in the late 1880s (photos 3 & 6). I fondly remember a long afternoon a century later when my friend and I were warmly welcomed by the locals who packed the room. Tetley Bitter was the only cask beer on tap back then but now there are five changing beers, often coming a fair distance. There are also two real ciders on handpump.
The lounge, or the Vaults, which you can get to by the side door is a little bit bigger, but not by much, and has its own bar counter (photo 4). The food, from the Yapas menu (Yorkshire Tapas) is innovative and tasty and includes charcuterie and cheese along with a selection of hot dishes.
Much of the exterior is orginal as well and the tiling and stained glass at the front are Victorian (photos 1 & 2). The excellent Vaults window at the side, though was only added in the 1980s, when the pub was one of Tetley’s ‘Heritage Inns’ (photo 5).
