The Black Swan Inn is just outside York city centre and is a welcome relief from the crowded tourist streets. It is a half timbered building which started life as a house in the late 1500s and became a pub sometime in the 1700s (photos 1 & 2).
Much of the original interior is still there, including a timber staircase, doorways and fireplaces. The Oak Room at the front of the pub has splendid 17th century wood panelling and beams, and is now the main dining room (photo 3).
The main clientele are tourists and the pub provides accommodation and dining, but the public bar at the back has a real feel of a local’s bar.
The Black Swan Folk Club has been meeting in the function room upstairs for many years and photo 4 shows a performance by Irish singer Lisa O’Neill.
