Blue Boar, Chipping Norton

The Blue Boar dates from the 17th century and started life as a coaching inn (photo 1). It has been opened out inside but still has a characterful inglenook fireplace in the main bar, and the timber-framed former stables are part of the restaurant.

It was recently taken over by Youngs and serves their beers, though the attractive inn sign still shows it as a free house (photo 2).

The blue boar is a heraldic sign referring to the Earl of Oxford and the white boar refers to Richard III. If you look closely you’ll see that the inn sign features both. The story goes that after the defeat in the Wars of the Roses of Richard, a Yorkist, White Boar pub signs were quickly painted blue because the Earl of Oxford was a Lancastrian.
