The Bridge Hotel is a long standing real ale pub right next to the High Level Bridge and opposite the medieval castle (photo 1).  It’s a large Victorian pub designed by Cackett, Burns Dick for John Fitzgerald in 1899. There are views of the River tyne from the raised area at the back and from the beer garden. There is attractive modern stained glass at the front and back (photo 2), and an older stained glass window at the side (photo 3). The older window has an art nouveau design so might be original.

Eight changing cask beers are sold and meals are served at lunchtimes. It attracts a mix of local workers, tourists and people steeling themselves for the walk over the High level Bridge! There are frequent live music events upstairs and The Bridge Hotel Folk Club has been at the pub since 1958, making it one of the oldest in the country.

The Bridge Hotel remained part of the Sir John Fitzgerald pub chain right up to 2020, when they were taken over by the north-east based Ladhar group.
