The Britannia started life as the home of a well-to-do farmer in the 16th century and didn’t become a pub until sometime in the 1800s. Its village green location halfway between the spectacular scenery of Langdale and the busy town of Ambleside would guarantee its popularity in itself but its reputation for ale, food and accommodation guarantees that the pub is constantly busy. It’s best to book if you want a meal, especially in the evening.
Langdale Brewery is a sister company to the pub and there are always two or more of their ales on, plus a selection from Coniston and other Lakeland breweries.
The inn signs shows a Royal Navy ship named Britannia rather than the familiar female figure with a shield and staff.
