The Carpenters Arms in Fitzrovia was built by the Wenlock Brewery in 1938 and still has lots of art deco features. Outside it still has its metal windows and the tiling advertising Wenlock Brewery (photos 1 & 2). Inside the panelled wooden counters in both bars are original. It is locally listed by the borough of Camden who describe it as an “attractively intact example of a public house of this era”.

Unsurprisingly given its location, it’s busy on weekdays with punters filling the pavement on sunny days. There’s also an upstairs bar and a roof terrace. The Carpenters does traditional pub food during the week and roast dinners on Sundays. There are three cask beers and a selection of craft keg beers.

Wenlock Brewery, which closed in in the 1960s, was based in Hoxton and owned pubs right across London.
