The spectacular stained glass windows in this pub look very old but they date only from 1989. They were commissioned by Samuel Smiths Brewery from stained glass artist Ann Sotheran and depict sporting champions and other notables of the Victorian era. The photo of the cricketer and the robed nobleman (photo 1) was taken from outside the pub in the evening , and the photo of the jockey and tennis player (photo 2) was taken from inside the pub in during the day.
The pub itself is genuinely Victorian, dating from 1860 and is Grade II listed mostly for its detailed exterior (photo 3) but also for its original bar fittings. It’s as close as you will get to a ‘corner local’ in this part of London with its dartboard and basic pub grub.
There is no cask beer but most of Sam Smith’s very good bottled beers are on offer.
