Hotel

The Clachaig is pretty much an all-in-one holiday destination with its hotel, self-catering chalets, food, 3 bars, live music and great scenery. It’s most definitely still a pub though, with 10 real ales and 400 Scotch whiskies on offer. Ales are from breweries like Cairngorm, Ardgour and Loch Lomond. Real cider from Cairn O’ Mohr and other Scottish makers is also available. Live music, mostly Scottish traditional, is on Fridays and Saturdays.

The old inn dates back to the 16th century and was a centre for mountaineering for much of the 20th century (photo 1). It’s now greatly expanded, especially since the 1980s, although it’s still dwarfed by the surrounding scenery, with the mighty Aonach Dubh a near neighbour (photo 2). And the inn sign stands in front of the much smaller but still impressive Creag Nan Gobhar (photo 3).

The pub was the base for some of the filming for the Harry Potter film The Prisoner of Azkaban and the scene of Hagrid’s hut was a short walk away. It also featured in the 2008 film Maid of Honor with Patrick Dempsey and Michelle Monaghan.
