The Holy Island of Lindisfarne lies just off the north Northumberland coast, connected to the mainland by a causeway. Lindisfarne is the Anglo Saxon name and ‘Holy Island’ came from its association with the works of St Aidan who founded the Priory in 634 and St Cuthbert who became its Abbott. Both names are used so take your pick.
The Crown and Anchor is on the market place in the village of Holy Island next to the Priory (photo 5), and the garden overlooks the dramatically sited castle (photo 4). Lobster and crab fishing still takes place and the harbour is a short walk from the pub (photo 1).
Cask ales are from local breweries including Hadrian, Muckle and Rigg & Furrow. Food is served lunchtimes and evenings and there are four ensuite letting rooms.
Just outside the pub is one of Admiral Fitzroy’s storm barometers (photo 2). After retiring from the Royal Navy in the 1850s, the admiral set about improving safety at sea. He designed a much improved marine barometer, and lobbied for them to be supplied to coastal villages and towns. Although he died before this took place, many were made bearing his name and can still be found in a few places in the UK.
