Traditional Town Pub, 3* Heritage Pub
The breathtaking Crown Bar is one of the most spectacular pubs in the UK. It’s hard to know where to start, but its delights include a lavish tiled exterior, a stunning ceramic bar counter, ornate wooden snugs, a wealth of stained glass and mirrors, and a bar back with whisky barrels and original spirit cocks. The pub is still lit by gas and each lamp has to be hand-lit each morning.
The Crown prides itself on the quality of its service and incredibly three of its staff have 115 years experience between them. It’s hugely popular with tourists, many arriving in large groups but its managed efficiently enough and if you’re in one of the booths you’ll barely notice.
Along with Wetherspoons’ Bridge House it has best choice of cask ale in the centre and you may well see Bass, Landlord and Nicholsons Pale Ale plus three others. Full meals and snacks are mostly traditional pub grub but with a few standouts like oysters, mussels and of course Irish stew.
