Traditional Town Pub, 1* Heritage Pub

The Crown is dramatically located beneath the monumental Stockport Viaduct which carries the West Coast Main Line between Manchester and London. The viaduct was built in 1840 with 11 million bricks and is still one of the largest brick structures in Europe.

The pub is wonderfully unchanged with a multi room layout, fixed bench seating and an old wooden bar counter. It had been closed for some time before the tenancy was taken over by the management of the Petersgate Tap in the centre of Stockport. They gave it a careful refurbishment and reopened it in August 2025.

There are eight handpumps serving cask ale with Draught Bass as a regular and a great selection from smaller and mostly local breweries. Outside a carved sign shows that the pub was once owned by Boddingtons Brewery who produced the much loved Boddingtons Bitter. The beer is now being brewed again by Lees Brewery, with the beer media quite positive, and it can often be found in the Crown.

Until quite recently the pub had a great set of etched and cut glass windows, but nearly all have gone. Only the Ladies entrance door glass remains but I’ve also included a photo from 2017 of the now sadly deceased ‘Bar Parlour’ window.
