The Crown is dramatically located beneath the monumental Stockport Viaduct which carries the West Coast Main Line between Manchester and London. The viaduct was built in 1840 with 11 million bricks and is still one of the largest brick structures in Europe (photos 1 & 5).
The pub is wonderfully unchanged with a multi room layout, fixed bench seating and an old wooden bar counter. There are some lovely original etched and cut glass windows including the door to the ladies loo (photo 2).
There are eight handpumps serving cask ale in a good range of styles and food is now being served both lunchtimes and evenings. There is live music at weekends, with bigger acts performing in the beer garden at the back. The event organisers have a Facebook group which lists the upcoming entertainment.
Outside a carved sign shows that the pub was once owned by Boddingtons Brewery who produced the much loved and sadly missed Boddingtons Bitter (photo 3). The Bar Parlour window glass is probably not original but is nicely crafted all the same (photo 4). There is one in a similar style at the Castle in Manchester.
