Crown & Kettle, Manchester

2 Oldham Road

The most distinctive feature of the Crown and Kettle is its gloriously extravagant ceiling complete with chandeliers (photo 1). A snug at the rear has mahogany panelling supposedly from the airship R101 which crashed in France on its maiden voyage in 1930.

The pub is a beer specialist with eight real ales and a large selection of craft beers, and was Central Manchester Camra’s Pub of the Year in 2019. Like many of the bigger craft beer outlets beers are listed on a big screen. The pub organises frequent tap takeovers from breweries far and wide. There’s a normal TV screen as well showing rugby and football tournaments but not Premier Leagues games.

It was built in the early 19th century and, unusually for a pub, it has tall gothic style windows and doorways (photo 2).
