Hotel, Traditional Village Pub
The Devonshire is a small country hotel built with local golden gritstone right on the cobbled market square (photo 1). It was taken over by Taylors Brewery of Keighley in 2015 and fully refurbished. Inside, there is a main bar area with flagstone floors and oak beams (photo 2), a smaller upper room with an old fireplace (photo 3) and a large carpeted restaurant area serving meals all day. There are also tables outside, both front and back. Most of Taylor’s beers are sold and eight ensuite rooms are available.
The pub exterior becomes the Drovers Arms in the latest series of All Creatures Great and Small, the Channel 5 TV series about a vet in the Yorkshire Dales. There is a corner devoted to the programme in the upper room (photo 4) and on the bar counter Taylors Golden Best is renamed ‘Drovers Bitter’. The interior of the Drovers shown in the series is actually the Green Dragon in Hardraw, and if you remember the original 1980s series, the Drovers, both inside and out, was the Kings Arms in Askrigg.
Grassington is a picturesque small town in Upper Wharfedale and is hugely popular with tourists visiting the town and the Yorkshire Dales National Park. The 72 bus runs from Grassington from Skipton every day with connections to Upper Wharfedale villages.
