Modern Town Pub

Doctor Duncan’s is in the corner of the imposing Gothic style Pearl Assurance building opposite St. John’s Gardens (photo 1). The entrance takes you a modern bar room, but after you’ve bought your pint take a step down to the right into a wonderful elaborately tiled room. Brown, cream and green tiles stretch from floor to ceiling in a space clearly intended to impress clients of the insurance company (photos 2 & 3).

Other rooms are decorated with medical memorabilia in a tribute to William Henry Duncan, generally known as Dr Duncan, the first chief medical officer of Liverpool. He campaigned against poor living conditions in Victorian Liverpool and was responsible for increasing the life expectancy of the city’s population (photos 4 & 5). There are also wall mirrors from the former Cains Brewery who converted this corner of the building into their flagship pub in the 2000s.

The pub has become known for the quality of its cask beers in the past few years with Beartown Bitter as a regular and an ever changing selection of interesting guest beers. There’s an equally good selection of keg and canned beers, also focussing on less obvious beer styles. Drinkers wanting alcohol free beers are well catered for too with a discerning choice of cans. Food is served all day.
