Traditional Town Pub
The Dog & Partridge is an 18th century corner local close to the city centre. In recent years the owners have developed a reputation for good quality food and cask beer.
There are four cask beers from local breweries like Abbeydale, Stancil, Chantry and Blue Bee. It has been an Irish pub for many years, and was one of Guinness’s Top 10 UK Pubs in 2024. There is a quiz night on Wednesdays, a folk night on Sundays and sport on TV.
It’s relatively unaltered both inside and out and still has its original facade promoting ‘Gilmour’s Windsor Ales & Stout’ (photo 1). Inside the original layout is fairly obvious, and there is an intact snug with fixed seating and bell pushes (photo 2). There is a nice Gilmours mirror (photo 3) and the external ‘Dog & Partridge’ window has a Gilmours logo (photo 4).
Gilmours was a Sheffield brewery, eventually taken over by Tetleys of Leeds, as can be seen in photo 5, taken in 2004. The original tiling was first painted green (photo 5), by 2016 was red (photo 6) and is now black (photo 1).
