Nottingham is the home of the pharmacy chain Boots and this was once the home of the Boots Social Club and one of their earliest chemists shops. The Embankment is a Grade II listed building by the prominent Nottingham architect A.N. Bromley. It has an imposing Mock Tudor exterior (photo 1) and an impressive interior.
The former chemist shop is now a bar called, appropriately, the Dispensary. Also on the ground floor, the main bar of the old social club is largely unchanged. It’s in the style of a baronial hall with a skylight running the full length of the room (photo 2). Upstairs there is a well-appointed committee room and a large ballroom, both also unaltered.
The pub is owned by the local Castle Rock Brewery and serves all of their beers and food all day. The ballroom hosts discos, live music, weddings, local events and exhibitions.
