Traditional Town Pub
The Exeter is a red brick street corner local, off the main drag but popular for both its food and beer (photo 1). It’s run by the local Dancing Duck Brewery (photo 2) and there are usually two of their beers alongside the regular Marstons Pedigree and three changing guest beers. Food’s a cut above the average corner local offering with dishes like crab risotto, hake panzanella and hommity pie. Although you’ll also find a few pub favourites like ham, egg and chips and bangers and mash.
The pub is surprisingly large with the main bar at the front and a jumble of rooms and spaces spreading in all directions. The most interesting is probably the room on the left with its snug created by tall old settles facing a range (photo 3). The music room at the far end is technically in the cottage, a different building, but is quirky and cosy (photo 4). There’s a large covered outside space as well.
