This is the favourite pub of Sheffield guitarist and crooner Richard Hawley who calls it “The Office”.
Fagan’s is one of the oldest pubs in the city centre, dating from 1790 (photo 1). It was refitted in 1953 and hasn’t changed much since. The main bar has plywood panelled walls and the bar counter has a plywood panelled front, both popular features in the 1950s.
The small snug on the right also has ply panelling (photo 3), and is the scene of a painting by local artist Pete McKee showing Sheffield musicians Alex Turner, Jarvis Cocker, Tony Christie, Phil Oakey and Richard Hawley (photo 4). McKee was also responsible for the large mural on the side wall, The Snog (photo 5).
The pub is best known for its folk music and there are regular sessions three nights a week and informal sessions most evenings. The music room at the back has wooden bench seating and a wall full of photos of musicians and other musical memorabilia (photo 6). Traditional pub food is served lunchtimes and early evenings, and the regular beers are from Abbeydale and Tetleys.
The pub is named after Joe Fagan who was landlord from 1947 to 1985, becoming Tetley’s longest serving licensee. He was a bomber pilot in World War Two and the inn sign shows him with a Lancaster bomber behind (photo 2). Current landlord Tom Boulding succeeded Joe Fagan in 1985, so his time as landlord is not far off that of Joe’s. Might it soon be time for a new inn sign, this one painted by Pete McKee?
