Traditional Village Pub
The Fleece in Haworth stands about halfway up the steep cobbled Main Street and opposite another steep cobbled street that leads downhill to the station. It dates from the mid 19th century and is made, like most buildings in old Haworth, from the local millstone grit. Despite the unappealing name the stone is an attractive golden colour in the sunshine (photo 1).
Photo 2 shows the pub in the snow with its old livery and a couple climbing the steep lane from the station. And photo 3 is a winter’s day as well, showing the upper floors, snow covered trees and the moon still shining brightly in the morning sunshine.
The pub is popular with the many tourists visiting Haworth, though there’s usually a good mix of locals and visitors in the evenings. It’s owned by Timothy Taylor, the local brewery from a few miles away in Keighley, and sells all their range of beers. The inn sign photo looks across the rooftops to the other side of the valley and the hills leading over to Hebden Bridge (photo 4).
