The Fox is a 17th century pub in the hamlet of Bucks Green close to the larger village of Rudgwick in West Sussex (photo 1). It’s Grade II listed and has low beams, wooden floors, and a brick bridleway running through the pub – of which more later. There are large gardens at both the front and back.
Like many pubs close to Horsham it was once owned by King & Barnes Brewery. As the inn sign shows they were taken over by Dorset brewer Hall & Woodhouse and the pub now serves their beers (photo 2).
The pub serves a mix of traditional British pub food and unusually, a selection of East Asian dishes. Meat is from local farmers, fish is from Brighton and vegetables are bought directly from Brighton Market. They also run a food shop which is both walk-in or for online sales with local delivery.
The story goes that pub was originally a mix of buildings separated by a bridleway which is now inside the pub. On Christmas Day each year a horse is ridden through the pub along the bridleway from the front garden to the back. There is a video of the 2020 event to prove it.
