George & Dragon, Portsmouth

The George and Dragon is an impressive building, with Tudor styling at the top and lavish tiling at the bottom. It was built by Brickwoods Brewery in 1926 and their name and ‘Brilliant Ales’ strapline is displayed on a lovely mosaic-tiled frieze. The architect was the prolific A.E. Cogswell who, in a time when pub design was becoming plainer, retained the more elaborate features of his earlier Edwardian pubs.

It’s mainly a locals pub in Buckland, a couple of miles from town, with a darts team and two boards, a pool table and sports TV. There are lunchtime meals and the cask beer is Sharps Doom Bar.
