The George is in the National Trust village of Lacock, home to the abbey, the Fox Talbot Museum of Photography and huge numbers of tourists at almost any time of year. The village is remarkably unspoilt and picturesque and unsurprisingly has been the location of a good number of TV period dramas, including Downton Abbey.
The George is a part timber-framed 16th century pub with a low beamed stone floored interior (photo 1). The large fireplace still has a roasting spit with a dog wheel. Specially bred dogs (turnspits) would revolve the wheel, hamster style, to keep the joint turning over the fire. The practice only died out because mechanical spit turners were invented.
The George on the inn sign is George II, King of Great Britain from 1727 to 1760 (photo 2). The sign also shows that the George is owned by Wadworths Brewery, and the pub serves all their beers plus a guest ale. Home made food using local produce is served, and the pub has two rooms to let.
