The Whittlesey Straw Bear Festival takes place each January with a person dressed as the “Straw Bear” paraded around the town centre (photo 2). Other festivities like morris dancing also take place and the pubs of the town are packed to bursting (photo 1). I say ‘morris dancers’ but the costumes of those in the photo aren’t what you might expect. They were good fun though.
The George is a Grade II listed building dating from the late 18th century when it was called the George and Star, and was probably built as a coaching inn. After a period of closure it was bought and renovated by Wetherspoons in 2010. It has the standard Wetherspoons all day menu and a wide range of cask beers.
