Borough Market
London
SE1 9AL
The Globe is right in the heart of Borough Market, recommended by celebrity chefs and attracting foodies from across London and the world to its high quality produce. The pub is surrounded by market stalls during the day and by high level railway lines at all times (photos 1 & 2).
It’s a Grade II listed building dating from 1870, around the same time as the railway, and built in an unusual curved heart shape. Historic England say that the variety of window openings, dormers and decorative treatments combine to make a most picturesque and striking design.
Inside its a traditional layout with modern canteen tables, wood floors and bare brick walls on two floors. There’s a good selection of cask and craft beers from London and around the country.
In the 1992 film Blue Ice, ex-spy Michael Caine lives above the Globe as does Renee Zellweger in the first of the Bridget Jones Diary films in 2001. And yes, the Globe really does have apartments on the first floor.
