The Golden Lion is a traditional country town hotel and coaching inn dating from the 17th century (photo 1). The old “dwarf door” to the left of the main entrance is dated 1671 (photo 2) and leads to the Lions Den, a long narrow room with wood panelling.
The rest of the pub dates from the late 19th century and the main central room has the bar counter, a large fireplace with wood burning stove and a grand staircase (photos 2 & 3). The large room on the right was refurbished in 2018 and is the main dining space. Outside, the courtyard, which once housed the stables in the coaching inn era, has seating, some of it in comfortable heated cabins.
The hotel was taken over by Thwaites Brewery a few years ago and sells most of their beers plus one or two guest ales. Food, including breakfast is served all day. There are 14 letting rooms, all ensuite and dog-friendly.
Settle is a small market town in the western Yorkshire Dales in Ribblesdale and is close to the Yorkshire Three Peaks, Whernside, Ingleborough and Pen-y-Ghent.
