Traditional Town Pub, 3* Heritage Pub

The Hare & Hounds is a Manchester institution, favoured by older customers for generations. It opens at 11 and soon fills up with regulars in all the bars, and on Wednesday and Sunday afternoons there is a singalong or a DJ playing hits from the 60s to the 80s.

The pub was expensively remodelled in 1925 and most of the fittings from that period are intact. Outside it has green tiling and leaded windows on the lower floor (photo 1) and a tiled entrance corridor leads to the bars. The first room you get to is a northern style drinking lobby with brown and cream tiling and a large three-bay bar counter (photo 2). Above the counter are leaded glass panels and behind is the original bar back with mirrors.

Off the lobby at the front is the Vault, with more tiling, access to the counter and interesting old photos of Manchester on the walls (photo 3). At the back is the third room with original fixed seating, bell pushes and a 1920s wood surround fireplace.

Holts Bitter on handpump is always available along with two other changing cask beers.
