If you’re a beer drinker or just fond of pubs, the Horse Shoe is the must-visit pub in Glasgow (photos 1 & 2). It’s a combination of factors really: the choice of beer, the ambience, the amazing horseshoe bar, the ornate features, and its general ‘Glasgowness’.

The classic Scottish island bar is one of the best in the country, and certainly the longest. Unusually for a heritage pub the partitions were removed as long ago as 1901 and it’s been open-plan ever since. A refurb in the 1880s brought about most of the examples of Victorian artistry – the mosaic floor, wood panelled walls and carvings, tiled paintings (photo 4), whisky barrels behind the bar, stained glass windows (photo 3) and mirrors.

Four cask beers from breweries across the UK are available and food is served all day in the bar and in the upstairs dining room. If you’re in good voice there’s karaoke upstairs a few nights a week.
