Traditional Town Pub, 3* Heritage Pub
This bar is an exceptional survivor, one of very few pubs anywhere with a 1960s decor. The exterior has a mosaic-tiled wall topped by a wooden fascia with classic 1960s lettering (photos 1 & 5). Inside, in both the bar and lounge, a large curved structure at ceiling height echoes the curve of the formica-topped counter beneath it (photo 3). In the bar, two-level formica tables are fixed to the floor (photo 4). On the bar counter is a 1960s heated food cabinet serving Scotch pies with a choice of baked beans or peas (photo 2). Historic Environment Scotland say The Laurieston is a rare survival of a public house with a comprehensive near-intact (external and internal) 1960s decorative scheme.
The excellent Jarl from Fyne Ales is always on tap along with two changing beers from Scottish breweries.
The two brothers who ran the Laurieston for many years, always in white shirt and tie, retired recently but I hear that under the new owners the pub is as good as ever. It featured in the 2019 film Wild Rose starring Jessie Buckley about a young Glasgow woman who dreams of becoming a country music star. It also stood in for the Oxford Bar in the first TV series of Rebus, the one starring Ken Stott.
