Market Porter, Borough

9 Stoney Street
Borough Market
London

The Market Porter was one of the early examples in London of a real ale pub serving multiple ales, and even had its own brewery. I remember it as one of the few places in London that you could get Boddingtons Bitter, the much loved ale from Salford. The beer choice is smaller these days with four cask ales, always including Harvey’s Sussex Best Bitter.

The pub is on the edge of the very popular Borough Market, and it still opens in the morning between 6.00am and 8.30am for market workers. Early morning opening was once a common tradition in London’s market pubs. The only other pub I know that still does it is the Fox and Anchor, close to the old Smithfield meat market.

Food is available all day, and while it includes a few of the favourites, it’s a step up from the average pub menu. On Sundays the traditional roast with Yorkshire pudding is very popular.
